MTHS journalism students earn top honors in national student competition
Nearly 3,900 students, educators, and media professionals gathered in Seattle for a national journalism conference, showcasing the talents of high school journalists. Among the participants, MTHS students excelled, with 873 competing in various on-site contests. David Cardwell received Superior in Sports Action Photography and placed second nationally, while Efrata Solomon earned fourth place in Feature Photography. The MTHS print Hawkeye newspaper ranked sixth in the NSPA Best of Show contest for schools with fewer than 1,800 students. For the 15th consecutive year, the MTHS community was awarded the First Amendment Press Freedom Award, highlighting its commitment to free expression.
The award was accepted by key representatives from the school and district, including Edmonds School Board Director Carin Chase. Journalism instructor Vince DeMiero emphasized that the recognition is a testament to the supportive community in which the student media operates. This event underscores the importance of journalism education and the achievements of young journalists.
