For Gardeners Pruning rhodies at Rhody Ridge Arboretum

Lynnwood, WALocal News

At Rhody Ridge Arboretum, Edmonds College horticulture students learn essential pruning techniques to promote plant health and aesthetics. The winter class, taught by Keith Kelley from Kelley Garden Service, emphasizes the importance of understanding individual plant needs. Students engage in hands-on training, rotating through nine stations that feature various rhododendrons, each requiring different pruning approaches. Kelley highlights the significance of mindful pruning, as improper techniques can lead to undesirable growth or damage. The program equips students with fundamental skills applicable across various plant types, including shrubs, trees, and vines.

Rhododendrons, a staple in local gardens, are particularly emphasized, as students will likely encounter them in future work. The timing of the class, late winter/early spring, allows for effective pruning without compromising flower buds. Students are encouraged to consider the long-term impact of their pruning decisions on plant growth and aesthetics.
