Council revisits idea of lifting ban on cannabis sales in Lynnwood
The Lynnwood City Council is reconsidering its 2015 ban on cannabis retail sales, a topic that has resurfaced since the legalization of recreational marijuana in Washington in 2012. Council President Nick Coelho emphasized the need for cannabis sales in densely populated areas, specifically along Highway 99 and near Alderwood Mall. The Planning Commission has recommended these areas for potential cannabis sales, while also adhering to state regulations that restrict sales near schools and parks. Concerns were raised about delaying sales in the City Center until the completion of a future Town Square Park, projected to finish between 2030 and 2032. Councilmember George Hurst expressed frustration with the slow progress on this issue, noting the potential for businesses to be restricted.
Councilmember Patrick Decker remained opposed, citing health risks associated with cannabis use. The council is navigating a balance between fostering local business growth and addressing community health concerns. Ultimately, any decision made will reflect ongoing discussions about the future of cannabis in Lynnwood.
