Washingtons first battery ferry to enter service next week

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Washington's first plug-in ferry, the Wenatchee, is set to launch next week after a $133 million hybrid-electric conversion. Governor Bob Ferguson made the announcement during a demonstration, highlighting the ferry's status as the largest hybrid-electric vessel in North America. The Wenatchee will serve the Seattle-Bainbridge route, which has the highest ridership in the state ferry system, initially running part-time in the evenings. Passengers have already noticed a quieter cabin experience during test runs, according to Captain Robert Merideth. The ferry's operation will be limited by the absence of charging infrastructure, which is projected to be completed by 2029.

The conversion aims to save fuel and reduce air pollution, with an anticipated 25% fuel cost savings while running in hybrid mode. Shipyard workers removed two diesel engines but retained two diesel-driven electric generators for backup power. This initiative represents a significant advancement in Washington's efforts to decarbonize its ferry system, with plans for further electrification in the future.
