Democrats in Washington Legislature wrap up budget negotiations

Lynnwood, WAGovernment

Washington state Democratic lawmakers have wrapped up negotiations for a new two-year operating budget, with specifics likely to be revealed by Friday. Sen. June Robinson, the Senate Ways and Means Committee chair, indicated that all key decisions have been made, though potential adjustments may be required depending on upcoming revenue-raising legislation. Rep. Steve Tharinger, chair of the House Capital Budget Committee, reported that they have completed the budget numbers and will finalize the language shortly.

He noted that the budget is tight and may need revisions based on the revenue bills that are currently progressing through the legislature. The two bills, House Bill 2081 and Senate Bill 5814, are crucial for raising several billion dollars for the upcoming budget cycle starting July 1. Senate Minority Leader John Braun highlighted that the outcome of these revenue bills remains uncertain and could disrupt the budget process. Lawmakers aim to finalize the operating budget by Saturday morning, with a vote scheduled for Sunday, the last day of the session. The budget negotiations reflect ongoing efforts to balance fiscal responsibility with public service needs in Washington state.
