Bill removing drivers license requirement for employment signed into law

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Senate Bill 5501, sponsored by Sen. Derek Stanford, prohibits employers in Washington from requiring a driver's license for positions where driving is not a core responsibility. Stanford argued this measure is crucial to ensure that qualified candidates are not unfairly excluded from employment opportunities. The bill seeks to dismantle barriers for individuals with disabilities, who are employed at rates significantly lower than their peers. According to U.

S. Census data, over 12% of Washingtonians live with a disability, and many face employment discrimination related to licensing requirements. Anna Zivarts, director at Disability Rights Washington, noted that people without licenses are often young or from minority backgrounds. In 2021, only 25% of 16-year-olds held driver's licenses, a stark decline from 46% in 1983. The legislation positions Washington alongside Oregon and California in advancing employment equity.

SB 5501 will be effective starting July 27, 2025.
