Snohomish Conservation District, Verdant launch free community gardening program
The Harvest at Home program, launched by the Snohomish Conservation District and Verdant Health Commission, seeks to empower South Snohomish County residents to grow their own food in response to rising food costs and increased demand at food banks. The program began with a hands-on workshop for senior Hispanic residents, where they learned to utilize vertical gardening kits to grow essential crops like onions and beans. Participants received free gardening kits, soil, and seeds to promote self-sufficiency in food production. Future expansions will include additional workshops and edible community gardens in collaboration with local organizations. Educational programs will highlight the connection between home-grown food and improved nutrition.
This initiative supports families living in small spaces, such as apartments, where access to fresh produce is limited. Verdant Health Commission has invested significantly in community health programs, having allocated $87 million since 2011. Harvest at Home represents a proactive approach to tackling food insecurity and promoting healthier lifestyles in the region.
