WE SPEAK, an annual spoken word event, will take place on May 1 at Edmonds Center for the Arts, showcasing the power of personal storytelling. The spotlight will be on acclaimed artists Amber Flame and Sharon Nyree Williams, who will perform alongside young poets recognized for their work on the theme "The Stories We Tell. " This year's competition winner, Aly Fellores, highlights the importance of addressing uncomfortable emotions through poetry. Participants will receive scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 and will engage in workshops to refine their performance techniques. Flame believes poetry allows individuals to explore their connections to the world, while Williams sees storytelling as a means to shift societal perspectives.

The event will also feature an open mic, encouraging attendees to share their original pieces focused on identity, injustice, and mental health. This initiative not only celebrates artistic expression but also fosters community connection and understanding. Overall, WE SPEAK promises to be an inspiring gathering that amplifies bold voices in the local community.

Election 2025 Hurst holds lead over Frizzell for mayor in latest vote count

Incumbent George Hurst leads Lynnwood's mayoral race with 3,165 votes, while Mayor Christine Frizzell trails with 2,990 votes. Voter turnout reached 26.76% as of Wednesday evening. Other incumbents maintained their leads, except for Position 3 Councilmember Josh Binda, who fell behind Bryce Owings.
