Edmonds School Board reviews staff reductions for 2025-2026 school year

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Edmonds School Board convened on April 15 to review a resolution that could result in staffing reductions for the 2025-2026 school year, affecting a maximum of 12 certificated teachers. Superintendent Rebecca Miner emphasized that this proposal aims to align staffing levels with student enrollment figures, assuring that it will not lead to increased class sizes. She provided a hypothetical scenario illustrating how significant enrollment drops in specific classes could necessitate cuts to teachers with specialized certifications. Board Director Thom Garrard acknowledged the emotional impact of such decisions on educators, noting the difficulty of informing staff about potential job losses. In addition to staffing concerns, the board unanimously agreed to redirect up to $190,000 from lease agreements to the general fund to cover nonrecurring operational costs related to school facilities.

Miner mentioned that this annual transfer is part of the district's ongoing financial management strategies. Although the amount is relatively small compared to the district's financial challenges, Board President Nancy Katims emphasized its significance. The next school board meeting is scheduled for April 29, where the board will continue discussing these pressing issues.
