County Council Corner Local strategies to reduce child care costs, improve availability

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Snohomish County is currently experiencing a critical shortage of affordable child care, impacting families and the local economy. During a panel discussion organized by the Snohomish County Council, it was revealed that average annual costs for infant care reach approximately $20,370, creating a significant financial burden for families. Staffing shortages were identified as another major issue, with many potential child care workers opting for better-paying teaching positions due to the disparity in wages. The current educational requirements for licensed providers further complicate recruitment efforts. Excessive facility regulations and zoning restrictions also hinder the establishment of new child care centers, limiting availability.

To address these barriers, recent ordinances have been adopted to allow child care facilities in more unincorporated areas of the county. The hope is that this panel discussion will spark a broader conversation on developing effective policies to address child care needs. Local leaders are encouraged to collaborate on solutions that will ensure every child has access to quality care and education.
