School board recognizes Edmonds-Woodway student athletes for making history twice

The Edmonds School Board celebrated remarkable accomplishments by student athletes during its March 11 meeting, highlighting the Edmonds-Woodway High School boys basketball team's impressive second-place finish in the state championship, marking a historic achievement for the school. Athletic Director Angie McGuire praised the team's defensive prowess, which allowed them to dominate throughout the season with a record of 26 wins and 3 losses. In addition, Hannah Baldock was recognized for her groundbreaking achievements in girls wrestling, becoming the first state champion and reaching over 100 career wins. The board expressed appreciation for the hard work and dedication of all student-athletes across the district, emphasizing the importance of sports in fostering community spirit. Besides the athletic recognitions, the board approved significant policy revisions regarding the naming of schools and facilities, ensuring that future names reflect local geography.

Funding for a new ADA-inclusive playground at Hazelwood Elementary was also approved, with completion expected by August 2025. During public comments, community members called for curriculum changes to address the history of boarding schools for Indigenous students, advocating for the recognition of Every Child Matters Day. This meeting underscores the board's commitment to celebrating student achievements while addressing critical community issues.
