Jessica Roberts withdraws from Lynnwood City Council appointment

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Jessica Roberts has officially withdrawn her appointment to the Lynnwood City Council, aiming to prevent distractions caused by scrutiny of her personal life. After being appointed to the vacant Position 5 seat, Roberts faced criticism due to sexually explicit content she had posted online prior to her appointment. In light of the situation, the council announced a special business meeting to consider rescinding her appointment and explore options for appointing a new councilmember. Roberts stated that while she believes her personal life does not hinder her capability to serve, she chose to step back to allow the council to focus on its responsibilities. This is the second attempt to fill the council seat, as Rebecca Thornton had previously accepted the position but resigned just before taking the oath of office.

Former Councilmember Julieta Altamirano-Crosby vacated the seat on January 6, putting pressure on the council to fill it within the mandated 90-day period. The council's special meeting is expected to take place as scheduled, with a deadline to appoint a new member by April 5. This situation highlights the challenges elected officials face regarding personal scrutiny in the age of social media.
