Lynnwood, WALocal News

The YMCA of Snohomish County is hosting a free Girls Flag Football Clinic on February 23, designed to empower young female athletes from grades 1 to 12. Taking place at Cascade High School in Everett, the clinic will feature expert coaching from YMCA sports staff and guest instructors, including members of the Seattle Spartans Women’s Football Team and the Washington Wolfpack Arena Football coaching staff. A highlight of the event will be special guest Melissa Strother, the first woman to score points in an Arena Football League game, who will share her inspiring journey and mentor participants. This initiative is part of a broader effort to make flag football accessible and enjoyable, as the sport has experienced a remarkable 63% rise in participation among girls since 2019. The YMCA is committed to ensuring cost is never a barrier to participation, offering financial assistance where needed.

In addition to the clinic, registration is open for the YMCA’s Spring Girls Flag Football League, running from March 3 to May 10, providing further opportunities for girls to engage in the sport. This event reflects the growing momentum behind girls' flag football, supported by major organizations like the NFL. The YMCA aims to create a positive and empowering environment for young athletes to develop skills, build confidence, and make lasting friendships.
