Puget Sound youth invited to enter Edmonds Center for Arts poetry slam competition

The Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) is excited to announce the WE SPEAK youth poetry slam competition, inviting Puget Sound youth to showcase their spoken word performances. This annual event serves as a celebration of spoken word poetry and storytelling, integrating acclaimed artists with emerging local talent. Participants can explore important themes such as identity, injustice, and mental health, with this year's theme being "The Stories We Tell. " The competition will select three finalists, who will perform on May 1, 2025. The first-place winner will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship, while second and third place will receive $500 each.

In addition, all finalists will partake in a workshop with a local poet mentor to refine their craft before the performance. This initiative not only supports young voices but also fosters community engagement through art and expression. Interested participants must submit their entries by March 10 to qualify for this enriching opportunity.

Lynnwood candidates George Hurst, Derica Escamilla, Isabel Mata, Bryce Owings, and Robert Leutwyler maintained their leads in updated election returns. Hurst garnered 4,313 votes (51.22%) against incumbent Christine Frizzell in the mayoral race, while Escamilla led City Council Position 1 with 4,927 votes (59.79%). Voter turnout in Lynnwood reached 36.44%.
