Annual Christmas Bird Count continues Saturday, Dec. 28

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is set for Saturday, Dec. 28, in Snohomish County, continuing a 125-year tradition organized by the National Audubon Society. This community science initiative invites birders and nature enthusiasts to collect essential data regarding local bird populations. Brian Zinke, executive director of the Pilchuck Audubon Society, highlights the county's unique position of hosting two CBCs, which have been crucial in documenting trends over more than four decades. The CBC is renowned as one of the longest-running wildlife censuses worldwide, with volunteers counting all birds seen or heard in a designated 15-mile area.

The information collected informs conservation strategies and provides insight into environmental issues affecting both birds and humans. Recent CBC data has revealed concerning trends, including a significant decline in North American bird populations. This project welcomes volunteers, including families and individuals of all skill levels, to participate in a meaningful outdoor experience. Interested individuals can sign up for the local count or find a nearby CBC circle, contributing to an essential effort in bird conservation.
