Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Lynnwood Public Menorah Lighting and Celebration of Hanukkah will take place on December 29, 2024, at 4 p. m. at the Lynnwood City Center Light Rail Station. Now in its 13th year, the event is organized by the Chabad Jewish Center of Snohomish County and will feature a 9-foot Menorah, delicious holiday treats, and family-friendly activities such as face painting and balloon twisting. Rabbi Berel Paltiel underscores the event's importance, celebrating Hanukkah with joy and pride amid rising antisemitism and the ongoing conflict in Israel.

A standout feature will be the 'Gelt Drop,' where a fire truck will deliver chocolate coins to children, creating an unforgettable moment. Local dignitaries, including County Executive Dave Somers, will participate in the festivities, highlighting community support. This year also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first public menorah lighting in the U. S. , which occurred at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia in 1974.

This historical context enhances the celebration's significance, as public menorahs have become a staple of Jewish culture and American public life, symbolizing liberty and resilience against oppression.
