Comment: To serve power-thirsty AI, Exxon looks at electricity

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Exxon Mobil Corp. is strategically moving into the electricity sector to meet the rising energy demands of data centers supporting artificial intelligence. The company proposes constructing gas-fired power plants with carbon capture technology, aiming for operational readiness in about five years—much faster than the decade-long timelines for new nuclear facilities. This initiative directly addresses the urgent power needs of major tech companies such as Amazon and Microsoft, who are prepared to pay above-market rates for cleaner energy. Exxon's project management capabilities position it competitively in this market, allowing it to leverage its natural gas resources while contributing to emissions reduction.

CEO Darren Woods highlighted the urgency of transitioning away from nuclear energy due to its lengthy timelines. Ultimately, Exxon seeks to balance profitability with corporate responsibility by supporting the tech industry's growth while addressing climate concerns.
