WSU QB John Mateer entering transfer portal

Lynnwood, WALocal News

John Mateer, the standout quarterback for Washington State University, has announced his entry into the transfer portal, concluding his time with the Cougars. He had a remarkable season, leading the nation with 44 total touchdowns and guiding WSU to an eight-win season, their first since 2018. Coach Jake Dickert confirmed that Mateer will not participate in the upcoming Holiday Bowl against Syracuse. Despite efforts to retain him, including a reported NIL package worth over $1 million, Mateer opted to pursue opportunities elsewhere. Coach Dickert expressed confidence in Mateer's future, stating he would be one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal.

This departure is part of a broader trend at WSU, which has seen eight starters enter the portal. With Mateer unavailable, backup quarterback Zevi Eckhaus is expected to take over for the Holiday Bowl. Dickert emphasized the program's commitment to developing talent amid the challenges of the current transfer landscape.
