State settles for $8.5M after impaired driver killed couple on Whidbey

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation has reached an $8. 5 million settlement with the families of Kenneth Weikle and Sharon Gamble, an elderly couple tragically killed by an impaired driver on Whidbey Island. The incident took place in December 2021 when the driver, Danielle Cruz, was allowed to board the ferry despite clear signs of intoxication. Witnesses reported her erratic driving and a crash prior to boarding, yet ferry staff permitted her to continue. After the ferry ride, Cruz crossed the center line and collided with the couple's vehicle, resulting in their deaths.

Cruz was later convicted of vehicular homicide and sentenced to over 17 years in prison. This case has underscored significant lapses in safety procedures at Washington State Ferries, raising questions about staff training regarding intoxicated drivers. The plaintiffs' attorney emphasized that no impaired driver should ever be allowed to disembark from a ferry, highlighting the urgent need for better training. The families of the victims hope this settlement will prompt crucial changes in ferry operations to enhance safety.
