Sutton cites ‘total lack of leadership’ in departure from Lynnwood

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Lynnwood City Council member Shirley Sutton has officially resigned, citing a 'total lack of leadership' in the city administration as her primary reason. While she initially referenced personal health issues and a desire to return to Yakima, Sutton later elaborated that her resignation was largely due to the council's decision to delay an independent audit of the city's finances. In her communication with The Daily Herald, she expressed concern that without a thorough financial audit, the council would be ill-prepared for the upcoming budget season, raising fears about potential underlying issues within the administration. Sutton criticized the administration for not replacing the planning director and for ongoing personnel challenges, which she viewed as mismanagement. City spokesperson Nathan MacDonald expressed surprise and disappointment regarding Sutton's comments, emphasizing the city's commitment to maintaining strong financial health, as demonstrated by their recent recognition for excellence in financial reporting.

The council now faces a 90-day deadline to appoint Sutton's replacement, who will serve until the elections in November. Sutton's tenure on the council began in 2016, and she was re-elected in 2021. Her departure raises significant questions about the future direction of the Lynnwood City Council and its ability to tackle pressing financial and administrative issues.
