Lynnwood firm faces $790K in fines for improper asbestos handling

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Seattle Asbestos of Washington, a Lynnwood-based contractor, is facing nearly $800,000 in fines due to severe violations of safety regulations concerning asbestos removal. The state Department of Labor & Industries has cited the company for 35 willful health and safety violations, indicating a serious disregard for safety protocols. This is particularly concerning as it marks the fifth instance of non-compliance, which poses significant risks for both workers and homeowners. Inspections revealed critical oversights, including damaged plastic barriers and workers failing to wear protective gear, increasing the risk of asbestos exposure. Asbestos is linked to serious health issues, including asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Consequently, the Labor and Industries department has ordered the company to cease operations until the violations are addressed and is pursuing revocation of its asbestos work certification. Homeowners are strongly encouraged to verify the credentials of contractors before hiring for asbestos removal to ensure adherence to safety regulations.
