Lynnwood appoints new council member after abrupt resignation

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Lynnwood's City Council has appointed Derica Escamilla to fill the seat left vacant by Shirley Sutton, who resigned unexpectedly in May. Escamilla, 43, brings nearly two decades of experience in environmental science and has previously served on multiple city boards, including the South Lynnwood Neighborhood Co-Design Committee and the Economic Development Board. Her appointment was decided by a 4-2 vote, with council members David Parshall and Nick Coelho supporting another candidate, attorney Lu Jiang. In her speech to the council, Escamilla stressed the urgency of addressing pressing issues like gang violence, homelessness, and youth mental health, which she believes are critical to fostering a safer community. Sutton's resignation was notably influenced by her frustrations over the lack of leadership within the city's administration, as she sought an independent audit of city finances before her departure.

Escamilla is expected to take her oath of office at the upcoming council meeting and intends to run for election next year to secure her position. The council's decision to appoint her marks a significant change in leadership dynamics and priorities, and Escamilla's expertise and commitment may play a pivotal role in shaping future initiatives.
