‘A brutal hit’: Everett library cuts will lead to reduced hours, staffing
The Everett Public Library is set to experience significant operational changes due to a proposed 12% budget cut beginning in 2025. The annual budget will decrease from $5. 8 million to $5. 1 million, resulting in reduced operating hours from 96 to 72 hours per week and a staffing reduction from 38. 4 to 32.
7 full-time equivalent workers. These cuts are part of the city's strategy to address a $12. 6 million deficit in its general fund, exacerbated by the rejection of a property tax levy by voters. Library Director Abigail Cooley has raised concerns about the detrimental effects of these cuts on community access to library services, predicting longer wait times for books and reduced service availability. The new operating hours will take effect on December 1, ahead of the City Council's final budget approval.
Staffing reductions will be achieved through voluntary buyouts and furloughs, starting in late December.
