Mountain Loop Highway closes for the winter

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Mountain Loop Highway, a scenic route providing access to the Glacier Peak Wilderness, has officially closed for the winter as of November 22, 2024, at 9 a. m. The U. S. Forest Service announced the closure due to safety concerns stemming from current and projected weather conditions.

Along with the highway closure, Pilchuck Road has also been shut down at the Heather Lake Trailhead, further restricting access to this popular hiking area. Each winter, snow accumulation necessitates the highway's closure, with maintenance and repairs typically carried out by county and federal workers during this period. This year's closure comes notably earlier than last year's, which began on December 7. Historically, closures have occurred as early as November 9 and can last until mid-July. The Mountain Loop Highway is heavily trafficked in the summer months, with up to 200 cars using it daily, leaving local hikers awaiting spring for its reopening.
