Explore WA state parks in free, guided New Year hikes
On January 1, 2026, Washington state parks will host First Day Hikes, featuring guided and self-led outdoor activities at over 30 locations. Events will include snowshoe treks, interpretive activities, and hikes, such as a 9:30 a. m. hike to Middle Falls at Wallace Falls State Park. Most hikes require advance registration, with limited group sizes.
Participants can access state-managed lands for free, though a Sno-Park permit is necessary at specific parks operating as Sno-Parks during winter. In 2025, the event saw over 1,800 participants hiking and snowshoeing more than 2,750 miles with State Parks staff, highlighting the program’s popularity. The initiative, supported by the Washington State Parks Foundation, aims to encourage outdoor activity on the first day of the year. This year's event promises to attract many outdoor enthusiasts looking to start the new year actively. For more details and registration, visit the State Parks website.
