Former Microsoft CEOs philanthropy will donate up to 170M a year for free preschool in WA

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Ballmer Group announced a commitment of up to $170 million annually for the next ten years to enhance Washington's Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP). This funding could provide an additional 10,000 preschool slots for low-income families, addressing a critical need amid recent budget cuts. Gov. Bob Ferguson described the funding as “truly transformative,” highlighting its significance for children's educational readiness. As part of the agreement, the state pledged to maintain ECEAP funding levels for the next decade.

Established in 1985, ECEAP serves children ages 3 and 4 and offers free early learning and support services. A 2022 report indicated that ECEAP participants are more likely to be ready for kindergarten, although it does not necessarily improve long-term academic outcomes. The Ballmer Group's executive director stated their commitment to accelerating access to high-quality early learning in Washington. However, the investment's full realization may take years, depending on demand and provider availability.
