Safe parking program strives to make no one feel less than

The Car Camp Safe Parking Program, operated by the Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Congregation (EUUC), marks its 10-year anniversary, providing 10 parking spaces for individuals living in vehicles. Grant Gladow, a program administrator, emphasized the growing demand linked to rising housing costs, with the county's recent report indicating 246 unsheltered individuals in vehicles this year. The program has served about 350 people since its launch in December 2015, allowing guests to stay for 90 days with access to essential resources. In June, a $9,990 grant from the Hazel Miller Foundation supported gas and laundry vouchers for guests actively seeking employment and housing. The EUUC is exploring options to offer more direct assistance, such as case management services, to further support their guests.

The program reflects the congregation's commitment to social justice by honoring the dignity of every person. Nearby initiatives, like the Lake Washington United Methodist Church's Safe Parking Program, also highlight the effectiveness of such resources. Those in need of assistance can contact local resources for safe parking options.
