Ecology taking an early look at geothermal energy in Washington
The Washington State Department of Ecology is spearheading a collaborative initiative to explore geothermal energy resources in three specific regions: Mount Baker, Mount St. Helens, and the Wind River valley. This effort aims to identify risks and opportunities associated with geothermal development as the state shifts towards renewable energy sources. Currently, no geothermal projects are proposed, but the department emphasizes the importance of community and tribal feedback to understand local concerns. In the next 18 months, Ecology plans to host a series of workshops to gather input and share information about the potential impacts of geothermal energy.
A virtual meeting is scheduled for November 12 from 9-10:30 a. m. , inviting stakeholders to discuss their views. The Washington Geological Survey has identified these areas as having geothermal resource potential, which could provide clean energy without greenhouse gas emissions. Ecology has created an interactive story map detailing geothermal energy's benefits and usage.
The department encourages residents to engage in this process to shape future studies and development plans.
