Teen Talk Why Gen Z values thrifting

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Generation Z increasingly embraces thrifting as a sustainable and affordable fashion choice, with local teens like Ellie Alderson and Davian Gnanarajah highlighting its environmental benefits. Alderson, a Lynnwood resident, has been thrifting for years and believes it reduces waste in landfills. Gnanarajah sees thrifting as a means to express creativity, often customizing his finds. The trend has gained momentum, partly due to Macklemore's hit song "Thrift Shop" and social media platforms promoting "Outfit of The Day. " Thrift stores offer unique items at low prices, making fashion accessible for teens.

Alderson also resells thrifted items online, contributing to a circular economy. Many thrift stores donate profits to support social causes, enhancing their appeal. As thrifting becomes a cultural staple, its longevity remains to be seen.
