State transportation department ramps up winter snow and ice preparations

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has ramped up preparations for winter, with nearly 1,500 maintenance workers stocking supplies and inspecting over 500 snowplows. Travelers are advised to follow winter driving tips and ensure their vehicles are equipped with traction tires featuring a mountain and snowflake symbol. Poor driving decisions can lead to mountain pass closures, affecting all travelers. WSDOT Maintenance Operations Manager James Morin highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in keeping highways accessible. During heavy storms, drivers should consider modifying travel plans and remain vigilant of pedestrians.

WSDOT offers several resources, including a mobile app and email updates, to assist travelers in navigating winter conditions. Studded tires are permitted from November 1 to March 31, but they require chains when conditions demand them. Drivers should also consider alternatives to studded tires that are less damaging to roadways.
