Judge Denies Bail Reduction for Alderwood Mall Shooting Suspect Samuel Gizaw

Lynnwood, WALocal News

In a significant ruling, Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Anna Alexander denied a request to lower the bail for 16-year-old Samuel Gizaw, who is accused of fatally shooting 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson at Alderwood Mall. The judge maintained the bail at $2 million, citing a "substantial danger" that Gizaw could commit additional violent crimes if released. Although the defense presented letters from community members praising Gizaw's character and involvement in local activities, the judge remarked that this support seemed uninformed about Gizaw's potential threat to public safety. Gizaw's parents have agreed to use their home, valued at between $790,000 and over $1 million, to cover a portion of the bail. The defense does not dispute that Gizaw was suspended from school during the time of the shooting but highlights his engagement in community service and sports.

In contrast, the prosecution's affidavit describes Gizaw as having a troubling reputation for violence. The ruling reflects the court's prioritization of community safety in light of the serious nature of the charges against him. The case continues to draw attention as it raises questions about youth violence and community responsibility.
