What a blast Project to improve traction in SR 99 tunnels in Seattle
The Washington State Department of Transportation will enhance traction in the SR 99 tunnel starting August 18 with a $1. 5 million project. This work will involve shot-blasting the driving surface, which has deteriorated since the tunnel's opening in February 2019. Up to five nightly closures for both northbound and southbound lanes will take place from 11 p. m.
to 4:30 a. m. and 10 p. m. to 5 a.
m. , respectively. Detours will guide drivers around the closures to maintain traffic flow. The project aims to restore tire grip for the 47,000 vehicles that traverse the tunnel daily. This restoration will improve safety and driving conditions in the area.
The work will begin with the northbound lanes and will shift to the southbound lanes once completed. The project is set to wrap up before the busy Labor Day weekend, ensuring minimal disruption for travelers.
