Concealed carry licenses in Washington jump after approval of gun permit law

Lynnwood, WALocal News

By the end of July 2025, Washington reported 713,195 active concealed pistol licenses, marking an increase of over 14,000 licenses since the start of the year. This trend follows the passage of House Bill 1163, which will require gun buyers to obtain a permit from the Washington State Patrol starting in May 2027. Dave Workman, editor of TheGunMag. com, highlighted that fears surrounding crime often drive individuals to seek concealed carry licenses, despite a reported decrease in crime this year. The new law enhances existing background checks and mandates proof of firearms safety training for applicants.

Despite the drop in crime, a sense of insecurity remains among residents, prompting many to prioritize personal safety. Significant growth in license holders is evident in counties like Grant and Whatcom, while King County, the most populous, also saw an uptick. The National Rifle Association criticized the permit system, arguing it complicates the exercise of constitutional rights for law-abiding citizens. In contrast, advocates for gun responsibility argue that such measures are necessary to address gun violence and suicides.
