State launches certification for LGBTQ-owned businesses

Washington state has initiated a free LGBTQ Business Enterprise certification program to support LGBTQ-owned businesses in securing government contracts. Governor Bob Ferguson emphasized the significance of this program in fostering equity within the state's diverse business environment. The Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE) has a long history of certifying minority- and women-owned businesses for public contracting, dating back to 1983. The new LGBTQ program will track state spending with certified businesses and aims to report its findings by 2026. OMWBE Director Lekha Fernandes highlighted the program's potential to improve equity in public spending.

Until now, LGBTQ businesses in Washington had limited certification options, primarily a third-party certification recognized only in King County. To qualify, businesses must be for-profit and have at least 51% LGBTQ ownership while meeting operational and net worth criteria. The program encourages small businesses to apply for certification to access state contracting opportunities.
