Washington Kids organized a backpacking party in Lynnwood to assemble 750 backpacks for low-income and McKinney-Vento students in the Edmonds School District. Volunteers gathered at the distribution center, working collaboratively to prepare essential school supplies, including pens, erasers, and pencil pouches. Executive Director Kim Gorney emphasized the organization’s mission to ensure that all children have equal access to basic needs. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act provides federal support for educational programs aimed at homeless students. Board Member Thom Garrard noted that access to school supplies is crucial for students facing housing insecurity.

The Edmonds School District reported that 44. 4% of its approximately 21,000 students are low-income, highlighting the significance of this initiative. The backpacks will be distributed at Meadowdale High School on August 14 at 3 p. m. Washington Kids has been organizing this event for five years, showcasing the community's commitment to supporting vulnerable families.
