Have unwanted medication? Heres a safe and easy way to dispose of it

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Washington’s Safe Medication Return Program provides a convenient and responsible way for residents of South Snohomish County to dispose of unwanted medications. Offering both mail-in envelopes and drop-off locations, the program aims to mitigate the risks of poisoning and overdose, particularly in children, and to address environmental concerns from improper disposal. Residents can return a variety of medications, including over-the-counter, prescription, and pet medications, while items such as vitamins, cosmetics, and illicit drugs are not accepted. Funded by drug manufacturers, the program operates at no cost to taxpayers, promoting safe disposal practices. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration states that approximately 50% of individuals who misuse prescription medications acquire them from friends or family members.

This highlights the importance of safely disposing of unused medications to prevent misuse and addiction. MED-Project manages the program with oversight from the Washington State Department of Health, reinforcing the state's commitment to public health and safety. By providing these disposal options, Washington leads the way in addressing medication safety and environmental protection.
