WA Department of Health launches tool to help residents find free naloxone
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) launched the Naloxone Finder, an online tool designed to help residents locate free naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. In 2024, preliminary data showed that over 3,100 individuals in Washington died from drug overdoses, with opioids linked to 79% of those deaths. Hosted on the DOH website, the Naloxone Finder builds on a similar initiative developed in 2018 by the Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute. Naloxone, marketed as Narcan, can be administered as an injection or nasal spray and does not require special training, making it accessible to anyone. Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, the state health officer, highlighted the tool's significance for opioid users and their loved ones.
The DOH also encourages individuals to purchase naloxone through pharmacies, as free supplies are limited. In addition to the Naloxone Finder, the DOH has implemented overdose prevention campaigns to raise awareness about the opioid crisis. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance public safety and provide vital resources to those at risk.
