Rick Steves issues Challenge Grant to help save music education in Edmonds School District

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Rick Steves pledged $30,000 to help secure funding for music education in the Edmonds School District, which is facing a critical funding shortage. The district needs to raise a total of $120,000 by August 15, 2025, to preserve music programs for over 300 students for the 2025-26 school year. Deborah Brandi, executive director of the Foundation for Edmonds School District, stressed that without the funding, middle school music education will be eliminated, disrupting the pipeline to high school programs. Steves, recalling the impact of music on his own education, called it a fundamental community resource. He proposed that with his donation and matching contributions from others, the community could raise the necessary funds.

The foundation has already secured $60,000 and is now seeking the remaining amount. Steves emphasized that music education fosters empathy and strengthens communities, making it essential for all students. Donations of all sizes are welcome to support the “Save the Arts” campaign.
