This measure would make WA residents prove they are citizens when they register to vote

Lynnwood, WALocal News

A Republican-led initiative in Washington aims to enforce proof of U. S. citizenship for voter registration. Backers began collecting signatures after a Thurston County judge clarified the ballot description, stating the measure "concerns heightened voter registration requirements. " Jim Walsh, a key supporter, claims the requirement will strengthen election integrity and aligns with federal efforts from the Trump administration.

Critics argue that the measure's in-person proof requirement will deter potential voters and could lead to the disenfranchisement of existing voters. Roxana Norouzi of OneAmerica asserts that all voters deserve a chance to participate in elections. The initiative needs at least 308,911 signatures by January 2, 2026, to proceed to the legislature. If lawmakers do not act, the initiative will appear on the November 2026 ballot. County auditors will have until July 1, 2027, to identify existing voters with the required identification.
