Dueling Democrats 32nd Districts Ryu looks to unseat senator from her own party

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Rep. Cindy Ryu is set to challenge Sen. Jesse Salomon in the 2026 election for Washington's 32nd Legislative District, a stronghold for Democrats. Ryu, who previously endorsed Salomon, now claims he is “too moderate” and cites his vote to raise the rent increase limit as a pivotal issue. Salomon is proud of his record as a pragmatic progressive and emphasizes his effectiveness in addressing affordable housing and public safety.

Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen has criticized the emerging conflict as a distraction from the party's goals. Ryu's political career is on the line; if she loses, she will exit the legislature after serving since 2010. The 32nd District has seen strong support for Democrats, with both Ryu and Rep. Lauren Davis winning over 74% of the vote in their recent elections. Ryu has expressed concerns about Salomon's engagement with local representatives and events.

As the campaign unfolds, both candidates will seek to solidify their support within the party and their district.
