Community remembers 13-year-old girl killed in 2024 mall shooting

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Family and friends held a beach bonfire tribute for 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson, who was shot and killed at Alderwood Mall one year ago. Jayda was an innocent victim, struck by a bullet during a nearby fight involving Samuel Gizaw, who has been charged in connection with her death. Her cousin, Cali Huffman, recalled Jayda's love for summer gatherings, saying, "Gathering with friends and family around the fire and having s'mores would definitely be one of her favorite things. " Participants also advocated for "Jayda's Law," which calls for harsher penalties for juveniles found in possession of firearms. Thousands have signed a petition supporting this initiative, emphasizing the need for accountability in cases involving youth violence.

Coach Mike, Jayda's middle school track coach, shared that shirts bearing her uniform number were created to raise funds for future track athletes in her honor. The family continues to celebrate Jayda's life while navigating the slow-moving court case against her alleged shooter. They aim to keep her spirit alive through gatherings that reflect her love for life and community.
