One year later, memory of Jayda Woods-Johnson still guides a grieving community to action

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Community members came together at Mukilteo Lighthouse Park to honor Jayda Woods-Johnson, who was killed by gunfire at Alderwood Mall one year ago. During the memorial, many wore red, symbolizing Jayda’s favorite color, as they shared memories around a bonfire. Jayda was shot during an altercation involving Samuel Gizaw, who remains in custody with a trial scheduled for July 18. Support 7 Executive Director Shannon Sessions noted the family's gratitude for the community's support during this difficult time. Jayda's cousin, Cali Huffman, called for action on "Jayda's Law," which aims for stricter sentencing for juveniles involved in violent crimes.

Mayor Christine Frizzell acknowledged the shooting's chilling effect on perceptions of safety in Lynnwood. She emphasized the need for community initiatives like the ACCESS Project to address the root causes of youth violence. The memorial not only honored Jayda's memory but also served as a catalyst for discussions about preventing similar tragedies in the future.
