Washington state to buy new hybrid electric ferries from Florida shipyard
Washington State Ferries awarded a contract to Florida's Eastern Shipbuilding Group to build three new hybrid electric ferries, the first out-of-state contract in over 50 years. Governor Bob Ferguson chose the bid of $714. 5 million, which was significantly lower than a competing bid from local builder Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. Ferguson stated that the decision was made after considering budget constraints and the importance of delivering new vessels to the public at a fair cost. Despite local advocacy for Nichols Brothers, who argued for job creation and economic benefit, the governor prioritized cost savings.
The ferries, which will carry up to 160 cars and 1,500 passengers each, are set to replace aging vessels in the fleet, with deliveries projected for 2029. The total cost to taxpayers is expected to exceed initial estimates due to separate purchases for hybrid powertrains and oversight expenses. Senator Marko Liias supported the decision, stressing the importance of efficiency in light of rising construction costs. Local leaders expressed disappointment, highlighting the economic impact on Washington's shipbuilding industry.
