U.S. Rep. Larsen briefed on federal funding cuts threatening Sound Salmon Solutions operations

Lynnwood, WALocal News

U. S. Rep. Rick Larsen visited Edmonds' Willow Creek Hatchery to address the repercussions of federal funding cuts on local salmon recovery efforts. Sound Salmon Solutions expects a $145,000 loss due to the Trump administration's termination of funding for Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups, which are vital for community-based salmon recovery.

The hatchery releases 80,000 coho salmon each year and hosts educational programs in 26 elementary schools, fostering awareness about salmon's ecological and cultural significance. Larsen emphasized that the funding cuts are being reallocated to other federal priorities, including tax cuts, rather than deficit reduction. He is working closely with Sound Salmon Solutions to document the funding shortfall's impact on operations and educational programs. In addition to losing federal dollars, the organization faces cuts from the State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the elimination of the Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account program. Larsen aims to restore funding to ensure the hatchery can continue its critical work.

The ongoing situation highlights the tension between federal budget priorities and local environmental initiatives.
