Lynnwood adopts new development code, bypasses South County Fire sprinkler recommendations

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Lynnwood City Council unanimously adopted the Unified Development Code (UDC) and the City Center + Alderwood Plan at a recent meeting. The council decided against including a fire sprinkler requirement for new residential buildings, despite recommendations from South County Fire. Councilmember David Parshall expressed concerns that such a requirement could raise housing costs, emphasizing the importance of affordable housing. Votes on the allocation of opioid settlement funds and the creation of a youth council were postponed to allow for further discussion. The UDC is intended to streamline development processes and ensure compliance with state housing mandates.

Additionally, the council confirmed Dorina Katro and Noel Baca as new members of the Planning Commission. The City Center + Alderwood Plan aims to integrate the two areas, promoting sustainable growth and improved access. This comprehensive approach seeks to enhance Lynnwood's urban experience and its retail core around Alderwood Mall.
