South London film festival at risk, says founder
The Crystal Palace International Film Festival (CPIFF) may close if local councils pursue a £6,500 fee for film ratings, according to founder Neill Roy. Launched in 2009, CPIFF has attracted filmmakers and audiences, becoming a showcase for emerging talent. Roy described the festival as a cherished community event, urging councils to reconsider their position. A petition to save CPIFF has gathered over 1,500 signatures, reflecting strong local support. Lambeth Council stated that fees are consistent for all organizations seeking film classification, emphasizing their responsibility to protect young audiences.
Bromley Council echoed this sentiment, citing compliance with the Licensing Act 2003 due to the festival's plans to include children. Roy proposed allowing councils to rate a selection of films or making all films 18-rated to alleviate concerns. He stressed that without the festival, opportunities for young creatives in the film industry would diminish significantly.
