Council challenged on trans colours road crossing
Blessing Olubanjo, a resident of Camden, is challenging the local council over the presence of four road crossings painted in transgender colors, arguing they infringe upon her rights as a Christian. Installed in 2021 in Bloomsbury, these crossings were intended to promote transgender awareness and reflect the borough's LGBTQ+ history. Olubanjo has issued a pre-action letter to Camden Council, threatening judicial review proceedings unless the crossings are either removed or repainted. Camden Council firmly rejects her claims, stating its commitment to fighting discrimination and supporting all residents, including the trans community. The crossings have previously raised concerns about visibility for disabled persons, with the RNIB indicating that colorful crossings may not be recognized as safe crossing points.
The Christian Legal Centre, supporting Olubanjo, cites the Local Government Act 1986, which prohibits councils from engaging in political messaging. Council documents from 2021 noted a small number of concerns regarding disability access related to the colored crossings. Olubanjo's case raises significant questions about public safety, equality obligations, and the role of local authorities in political expression.
