Congestion Charge set to rise by 20 to 18

London, UKLocal News

Transport for London (TfL) plans to increase the Congestion Charge from £15 to £18 starting January 2, the first increase since June 2020. Electric vehicle drivers will pay £13. 50 daily with a 25% discount if registered for auto pay, while HGVs and vans will incur a charge of £9. The Federation of Small Businesses criticized the increase as "swingeing," emphasizing the difficulties faced by small firms in a challenging economy. TfL maintains that the increase will help manage the growing number of vehicles in central London, which has the most congested roads in Europe.

The charge operates on weekdays from 07:00 to 18:00 and weekends from 12:00 to 18:00. TfL also plans to raise the Congestion Charge annually alongside public transport fare increases, reflecting inflation. Applications for new residents' discounts for petrol and diesel owners will be abolished in March 2027. A public consultation on these changes will run until August 4, allowing citizens to voice their opinions.
