Utility company pays 7,000 over unsafe roadworks
Electricity Network Company (ENC) Ltd faced legal repercussions after it was fined £7,016 for unsafe roadworks in Tooting, south London. The company admitted to breaching safety regulations by failing to use adequate signs, cones, and barriers during roadworks on Trinity Crescent in August 2024. Lavender Hill Magistrates' Court issued the fine on April 22, with the company expressing sincere regret over the incident. Local transport officials, including Wandsworth cabinet member Jenny Yates, condemned ENC's actions as dangerous and unacceptable. The council documented the inadequate pedestrian barrier arrangements through photographs, which ENC acknowledged.
The company emphasized its commitment to health and safety, claiming an otherwise excellent reputation across Wandsworth and the UK. An ENC director expressed disappointment over the damage to their reputation and assured that firm actions have been taken to uphold safety standards. This case highlights the importance of rigorous safety compliance in public works to protect community welfare.
