Boy killed on rail crossing 'distracted by phone'
Jaiden Shehata, an 11-year-old boy, died after being struck by a Southern train while crossing at a level crossing near Kenley on January 23. Investigators found that he was likely distracted by a video on his mobile phone at the time of the accident. The crossing lacks safety barriers or warning lights, relying on users to stop, look, and listen before crossing. In response, Network Rail is implementing new safety measures, including miniature stop lights, to provide clearer signals for pedestrians. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has recommended that school curricula include railway safety lessons to raise awareness among young users.
Jaiden had used this crossing regularly since starting at Riddlesdown Collegiate secondary school in September 2024. Prior assessments recorded six near misses and a previous fatality at the site, underscoring the need for improved safety. The urgency of these changes is heightened by the investigation's findings on the risks associated with mobile phone distractions near train tracks.
